Mini computers are computing devices that are larger than a personal computer but smaller than a mainframe computer. Mini computers have been around since the 1960s and during that particular period processor chips were reduced in size significantly. This made computers to be able to run with only a few cabinets and not in form of a mainframe computer that usually took space of an entire room.
Mini computers still serves as a multiuser system more like a mainframe but has a smaller size. These computers are easy in handling aspect and serve similar functions as many other computer systems. Mini computers can thus be regarded as the multi processing computers as well, which are primarily meant for performing the tasks at same time.
Historically the first most popular minicomputer was a 12 bit machine prepared by the DEC and priced around $16000. Mini computers are also different in hardware and software, when compared with personal and mainframe computers. Also, the operating system in mini computers is different and designed to handle simultaneous users and workload. Operating system difference is the primary difference in all other computer forms. Mini computers were developed at 2nd generation level of computing. First generation level was the one on which people used micro computers for specific purposes.
People used to work more quickly and accurately on 1st generation computers but when mini computers arrived the interest and accuracy level of people improved even further. This made job handling and task performing capabilities to jump significantly and thus shortening the duration of workload from weeks down to hours and minutes. In the older times, mini computers were referred to as ‘stand alone’ computers. However, in today’s world the demand for such computers has decreased significantly due to people liking smaller sizes of computer like laptops, tablets, etc.
